City Co-Labs: Re-Making Place Exhibition in Partnership with the Northbank
How can we reimagine the role of public space in future cities in terms of inclusion, interaction and civic benefit? This exhibition presents the outcomes of our Civic Hack, exploring these questions in partnership with the Northbank BID.
Makerversity is a curated membership community of makers and creative businesses based at Somerset House, bringing together leading and emerging voices on innovation and future making. Collaborating with Makerversity members to shape the public programme allows them to share radical projects, create new work and inspire the public to make.
Makerversity’s Civic Hacks address the big social issues of our time. Fostering collaboration between makers and the public, we explore design’s role in creating radical solutions to the problems we face. The Re-Making Place Civic Hack explored the future city via the way we use and design its public spaces. In partnership with the Northbank BID, we drew inspiration from the ongoing project to pedestrianise the Strand-Aldwych area, as a starting point to develop innovative ideas and conversations around the function of public city spaces in London and beyond.
We invited makers across a range of disciplines, from architecture to tech and design, to create new products, systems and design tools which seek to reimagine the function of public space in the city of the future. Three briefs focused on different problems and solutions to redesign and reimagine these spaces:
How can we design interventions which improve inclusion and collaboration in city public space?
How do we use technology to improve the ways we navigate the city and interact with each other?
How do we place-make and develop cities for civic benefit?
The Civic Hack was open to the public so that everyone can come and express their use of public space in London. In this free drop-in exhibition, we invite all visitors to have their say, as well as vote for their favourite Hack solution! The winner will be announced at the end of the exhibition.
