One Aldwych

One Aldwych: a stunning independent hotel with a unique shape, style and story. Set in the former home of the Morning Post newspaper above the Strand, One Aldwych is perfectly positioned for those seeking an original hotel offering exceptional service and a beautiful, contemporary setting. Fully refurbished and reimagined in 2019, One Aldwych promises guests a truly unforgettable experience.

History

The distinctive three-sided structure of One Aldwych occupies the site of the original Morning Post newspaper which stood at 346 Strand. Following the creation of the Aldwych, a conveniently located crescent, a new building was erected by the paper’s owner. The project’s modern construction techniques were the talk of the city and the building’s stunning blend of Edwardian grandeur and Parisian elegance were widely admired. To this day it is often described as Mewès and Davis’ finest work and is thought to be one of the most important 20th century buildings in London.

The paper’s relocation to a new building in 1907 saw numerous other well-known publications and companies call the Aldwych home. From the Daily Telegraph and the Tatler to the Ministry of Defence and Aldwych Brasserie, the building has always been a dynamic hub for progression and imagination.

With its Grade II listing, it was sold to private independent owners who worked with Jestico and Whiles architects and designer Mary Fox Linton to create One Aldwych Hotel. Welcoming its first guests in 1998, the hotel has remained one of the finest independent hotels in London, always ready to charm with its personality and spirit.

One Aldwych’s fascinating history remains alive within the space of the hotel: the sign from 346 now sits at the entrance to our Lounge at One, while the original Austrian oak windows still take pride of place within our newly refurbished Lobby Bar.

One Aldwych: where elegance meets originality; London spirit gets a five-star finish.

Food & Drink

Lobby Bar

André Wallace’s Boatman with Oars sculpture welcomes you into One Aldwych’s dazzling Lobby Bar, a bustling hive of activity within the hotel. Whether it be early morning coffee and light lunches or evening aperitifs and after-hours nightcaps, the sleek interiors of the Lobby Bar are the perfect setting for any occasion, from business through to leisure. Witness first-class mixologists craft theatrical smoking cocktails and enjoy our gold leaf-specked, Champagne-topped coupettes; perhaps sip plummy sloe gin long drinks … The Lobby Bar at One Aldwych truly is a London institution.

Recent refurbishments redesigned the space of the Lobby Bar, introducing offbeat objets d’art and art nouveau curves alongside sleek, comfortable seating. All-day bar bites and classic British dishes are served up by our Executive Chef; allowing you to sit back and savour one of London’s most celebrated bars.

Indigo

Overlooking our buzzing Lobby Bar and out onto the crowds of Covent Garden’s famous theatres, light-flooded, mezzanine-level Indigo is trailblazing London’s culinary creativity. Executive Chef Dominic Teague reimagines British cuisine in exceptional dishes which bridge tradition and gentle innovation. Respecting the sustainability incentives of the hotel, Dominic has discreetly cut dairy and gluten from his lunch and dinner menus, and diners haven’t been able to tell the difference.

At Indigo, the finest ingredients from across the Isles take centre stage. Each plate showcases foraged foods and seasonal ingredients: Isle of Wight asparagus and seared Orkney scallops; mackerel cured with London gin; Rhug Estate lamb and Merryfield Farm duck; Valrhona mousse and seasonal pavlova.

Stop by for breakfast or lunch, pre- and post-theatre meals, or settle in for a long, lingering dinner – our doors are always open.

Indigo Roasts

Showcasing innovative food, courtesy of Executive Chef Dominic Teague, the Indigo menu incorporates the finest seasonal ingredients carefully sourced from the British Isles, and also happens to be entirely dairy and gluten free. While the menu has an undeniably healthy appeal, it also features substantial dishes to satisfy the heartiest of appetites. Catch up with friends over the weekend and indulge in a roast lunch done properly; tender meats including Rump of dry-aged Scottish beef, Leg of Cornish lamb and Cotswold white chicken, served with crisp roasties and all the trimmings.

Bees

When it comes to sustainability, One Aldwych has always led from the front and its green credentials are second to none.  The hotel reopens with a new bee-friendly rooftop garden, complete with beehive. General Manager Janine Marshall and her team worked with London-based charity, River of Flowers, who  help partners to plant ‘rivers’ of wildflowers and trees in urban landscapes to feed and shelter bees and pollinators.  As a thank you to River of Flowers, some luscious new cocktails, using bee-friendly ingredients – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic – have been created for the opening cocktail list, downstairs in the Lobby Bar, and £1 from each cocktail sold will be donated to the vital work of River of Flowers.

Dogs

One of the most stylish hotels in London has just opened its doors to our four-legged friends, creating a  doggie-friendly package  in partnership with Bowwow London,  the capital’s most chic dog shop and grooming parlour –  just a bone’s throw away.

”One things that lockdown has taught us is how much we value our pets, “ says Janine Marshall, “so we thought, if people are loving their pooches, they might like to bring them with them to London for a treat!  Our neighbourhood is very dog friendly, it is mostly pedestrianised – and we are lucky enough to have the magnificent Thames-side walks on our doorstep.”

Canine guests can choose an overnight stay, sharing their accommodation with their humans, at no extra charge.  They will be provided with a bed and bowl, while in residence, and treats from Bowwow to enjoy.  Or – if they are feeling a bit “ruff” –  they can book in for a bit post lockdown top-to-paw pampering at Bowwow’s grooming salon round the corner, for £75.00,

One Aldwych’s famous papier mâché dogs, Spencer and Lizzie (in the picture), who have enthusiastically welcomed human guests for 21 years since the hotel opened, are now really looking forward to welcoming their first furry visitors.
