‘For a near-perfect London night out, you can’t beat watching a movie in the beautiful courtyard at Somerset House.’ Time Out
Over 14 nights this summer, Film4 Summer Screen stages London’s best-loved outdoor cinema experiences under the stars with a typically eclectic programme of movies for all tastes, from cult classics to new releases and red-carpet premieres. Set within the stately surroundings of Somerset House’s neo-classical courtyard, movie-goers can enjoy a sun-down drink and picnic with early evening live DJ sets and special-guest introductions to selected films.
Amongst the titles planned for this year’s programme is the almost-legendary British cult comedy Withnail and I, starring Richard E. Grant; director Spike Lee’s incendiary masterpiece Do the Right Thing, with its wall-to-wall cool music and sweltering summer heat; the wild-at-heart road-movie True Romance, from the mind of Quentin Tarantino and starring Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette; and romantic-comedy’s crowning achievement Roman Holiday, the light-as-air classic that introduced the world to Audrey Hepburn.
In addition, we’ll be repeating the popular Best of 10 Public Vote, which for the first time last year gave fans, friends and followers the chance to select what film they wanted to see in the courtyard. Voters picked from the highlights of ten years of Somerset House screenings; this summer, the choice will be between ten of cinema’s greatest movie musicals. The winning film will take its place in the 2015 Summer Screen line-up and all those who voted will have the chance to book before anyone else. Details to be announced.
During the two weeks of Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House, film fans will also be able to come along to Behind the Screen. This diverse and entertaining programme of talks, workshops and family events brings the world of cinema into sharper focus, with special guests providing unique insights into a world that usually only exists up on the big screen.
The full programme of films will be announced in May, with further details about the Behind the Screen programme.
