Modernisation work will be undertaken at Charing Cross station, starting on Monday 26 September 2016 and scheduled for completion in December 2017.
TfL is refurbishing the station’s two ticket halls (Northern line and Bakerloo line), to improve the customer experience and get them ready for our city’s growing population. Works will include the replacement of floor, ceiling and structural features, but will not change the accessibility status of the station.
TfL has carefully considered the most effective ways of doing this while minimising the impact on customers and stakeholders and have chosen to temporarily close each ticket hall, one at a time, for thirty-nine and twenty weeks respectively. This will allow work to be completed safely and efficiently while we keep the station open. The dates of these closures are:
During the closure of the Northern line ticket hall, customers wishing use the Northern line will be directed to Embankment station (a two to four minute walk away). The walking route will be clearly identified via street signage. A similar diversion will not be required during the closure of the Bakerloo line ticket hall; customers will simply access the Bakerloo line through the refurbished Northern line ticket hall.
Whilst customers will be able to interchange at the station throughout the work, they may find it more convenient to interchange at Embankment and Waterloo stations instead.
TfL is putting in place a comprehensive plan to inform customers about the closures, which will include the website, targeted customer emails, station posters, in-station and on-train announcements, Twitter, and TfL Journey Planner. They are working closely with Network Rail and Southeastern to provide travel advice to rail users.
