Strand-Aldwych Artist Commission

The Northbank BID (in partnership with Westminster City Council and local businesses) has commissioned six shortlisted artists/collectives to work collaboratively with them and selected landscape architects LDA Design as part of the design development process of the Strand-Aldwych improvements (see Public Realm page for more information).

The artist brief was to develop concepts for the Strand-Aldwych area, working within one of the following design categories:

  • Materiality & structures
  • Sound, light & technology
  • Play, engagement & learning

The individual artists/creative organisations from across artistic disciplines are taking part in a 5-week process (from January 2019) with the potential for a further development stage in March-July 2019.

The ambition of the overall project is to transform this well known Strand-Aldwych location from a polluted, traffic dominated gyratory to a pedestrian focused destination with strong links to the surrounding districts.  The vision is for the area to become a global creative and thinking quarter which will be an international beacon for creativity, enterprise and learning, balanced with the everyday needs of the local community.

Ruth Duston OBE OC, The Northbank BID, said “This stage in the design is another way for us to make sure the community is at the centre of the Strand-Aldwych Vision. The artists – who may be local to the area – will be asked to consider the location and its neighbours when bringing ideas to the table, as well as the academic pool of excellence for potential collaboration. We are excited to drive forward an initiative that will contribute to ensuring this space is rejuvenated as a world-class and inclusive celebration of culture.”
